Green Bay, Wis. – In the spring of 2022, H.J. Martin and Son completed the 18,000 square feet of ceilings throughout the second floor of the 7-story U.S. Venture Center in the heart of Titletown, WI. The entire second floor houses CliftonLarsonAllen LLP (CLA), a firm that specializes in delivering integrated wealth advisory, outsourcing, audit, tax, and consulting services. For their work as the ceiling/Acoustical subcontractor, H.J. Martin and Son was awarded the Ceilings and Interior Systems Construction Association’s (CISCA) 2023 Construction Excellence Award.

The CISCA Construction Excellence Award submissions are judged on Presentation, Technical Quality, Quality of the Job, Complexity of the Job (Installation), Complexity of the Job (Manufacturing Process), Job Conditions, and the Overall Finished Product. H.J. Martin and Son received the award in the smaller than 50,000 square feet subcategory within the Contractor category. The general contractor on the project was Miron Construction, the Architect was BDH, with H.J. Martin and Son serving as the installing contractor.

While the ceiling was a standard 9’ – 10’, the installation was complex in that there were varying angels for the wood slat installation and challenges with the angels for the soffits and ceiling heights to adjoin. Throughout the installation, multiple products arrived with small defects that could have hindered the final look. To work through this, the installation team, led by Site Foreman Adam Farr and Project Manager Matt Kaczmarek, came up with alternate methods to install the products and still achieve the overall desired look. “There were definitely a lot of challenges within this installation, but the team worked together great, and we were able to create a space that is professional, yet fosters creativity and collaboration” says Project Manager Matt Kaczmarek.

The design within the space was unique, with different felt choices throughout with various size, shapes, and colors. BDH and the firm wanted to put a local spin on their office; featuring texture, patterns, bold colors, and colorful photo art showcasing local streets and landmarks, giving a nod to the community in which the employees work, live, and play. These unique design choices, paired with floor-to-ceiling windows, pulls the space together well.

H.J. Martin and Son Walls & Ceilings crews have begun utilizing a digital planning and layout system to better ensure drywall installation is done precisely and efficiently. This is a newer drywall layout technology made for use on large job sites. H.J. Martin and Son has used the program on jobs like United Healthcare and Prevea Hospital in Green Bay.

Construction worker in orange shirt uses tablet and digital planning technology to determine where walls will be built in a new hospital.

The systems communicate over Wi-Fi with a tablet to read architectural files. When laying out where walls will be located and built, crew members use a tablet to locate a point on the floor, and two lasers create an “X” within a few seconds. This allows the crew to accurately mark where the drywall track should be installed. Shapes, arcs, and other complicated layouts are easy to define with no manual calculations required.

With the help of technology like this digital planning system, days of creating and calculating layouts have now been broken down into hours. In addition to drywall layout, the system can be utilized by MEP contractors and is capable of assisting in the set up of warehouse racking, office, and cubical layouts.

H.J. Martin and Son has been named to the renowned ‘Top 50 Contractors’ list of Walls & Ceilings magazine for the third straight year.  Widely regarded as the leader in coverage of the walls and ceilings industry, the publication has generated its annual list since 2013.

The company was chosen to the W&C ‘Top 50’ for the first time in 2016, and each year has been the only Wisconsin-based contractor among the ‘Top 50.’

“We couldn’t continue to be one of the top 50 walls and ceilings companies in the U.S. without the dedication and top-quality work of our installers,” says H.J. Martin and Son CEO Edward Martin.  “I’m excited by our growth – last year we added 25 new employees in the Walls & Ceilings division – as more and more large-scale projects come our way.  Thanks to Walls & Ceilings magazine for its recognition of us.”

H.J. Martin and Son saw revenues increase 71 percent in 2017 over the prior year, due significantly to its work on the largest drywall project in company history, the new Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Mich.  Having begun late in 2016 with pre-fabrication work, it topped out with approximately 120 on-site employees and now is nearing completion.

An even bigger drywall project, a new hospital in North Dakota, is on the horizon for H.J. Martin and Son as that work is expected to ramp up in 2019.

The new Marquette General Hospital is a state-of-the-art, 500,000-plus square foot facility with 265 beds.  H.J. Martin and Son handled a wide range of work on the new health structure, including Gypsum Drywall, Cement Board and Exterior Sheathing; Metal Studs and Framing; Tape and Finish; Sound and Thermal Insulation; Installation of Hollow-Metal Door Frames; Lead-lined Drywall and Radiation Protection; and Acoustical Ceiling Systems.

The performance of the Walls & Ceilings division of H.J. Martin and Son on Marquette General Hospital has led to the company being awarded other substantial jobs, several of which are major projects in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Among them are the new Delta County Jail, work at Northern Michigan University and a Meijer superstore.

Projects of the Walls & Ceilings division include medical facilities, office buildings, sports and entertainment facilities, retail, K-12 and post-secondary educational buildings, casinos and hotels. On the retail front, H.J. Martin and Son regularly handles Walls and Ceilings work for retailers across the nation.

The company also has a long history of walls and ceilings work at iconic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, dating back to 1985 when the stadium’s first-ever luxury suites were built.

“All of these Top 50 contractors have displayed numerous skill-sets that warrant them to be among the best,” wrote Walls & Ceilings Editor John Wyatt in introducing the 2018 winners.  “What makes these companies the best is their thirst to stay progressive and relevant. That means employing new technology, actively looking for new products, competitive employment opportunities, safety departments and so much more. All in all, their talents have sustained their business model and made them industry leaders.”

Walls & Ceilings serves the interior and exterior wall and ceiling industry with the latest news and information regarding building methods, drywall, stucco/EIFS, ceilings, acoustics, steel framing, insulation, plaster technology and regulations in the market.  The publication bills itself as, “The Voice of the Industry since 1938.”

Company wins 22nd overall AGC Award for Mulva Family Fitness Center at St. Norbert College

Green Bay, Wis. – The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin has honored H.J. Martin and Son with a 2018 BUILD Wisconsin Award in the Specialty Contractor-Finishes category for its work on the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.

This marks the 22nd AGC award received by H.J. Martin and Son since the inception of the honor in 2003.  It also continues a streak of 11 consecutive times (2007-14, 2016-18) that the company has been recognized by the AGC of Wisconsin (the awards were not given out in 2015).

The award will be presented to members of the H.J. Martin and Son team at the AGC BUILD Wisconsin Awards Ceremony, Oct. 18 at the new Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Appleton.

“We are proud of our work on this project and thank the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin for recognizing it,” says Edward Martin, president and CEO of H.J. Martin and Son.  “We have a long history of involvement with St. Norbert College, through participation in construction projects and as an involved community partner.  We appreciate the trust shown to us by Miron Construction and Performa.”

The Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center is an ultramodern complex devoted to fitness, wellness and athletics at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.  The 128,000-square-foot expansion and renovation wraps around the original facility, built in 1979, and features a competition-grade swimming pool, large fitness center, and weight-training and performance areas.

The competition-grade pool within the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center at St. Norbert College

Three H.J. Martin and Son divisions participated in the project: Walls & Ceilings, Glass & Glazing, and Commercial Flooring.  Commercial Flooring provided an extensive tile installation, including the swimming-pool deck.  Walls & Ceilings handled exterior and metal-stud framing, drywall and ceilings replacement.  The Glass & Glazing division successfully navigated tight spacing on the building’s east side to install curtain wall with a trapezoidal top, along with laying a Dot Frit silk-screen pattern on the glass surrounding the pool area for aesthetics and solar-control performance.

A video on the project is available HERE.

H.J. Martin and Son owners Edward and Terri Martin also made a significant financial contribution to the construction of the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.  Its completion allowed St. Norbert to bring back its NCAA Division III swimming program; the school had not competed in intercollegiate swimming in a decade.

Performa was the project architect and Miron Construction served as the general contractor.

The Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin is the leading professional trade association for the commercial construction industry in the state of Wisconsin.  Known as the voice of the construction industry, this chapter of the AGC of America provides its members with a comprehensive and invaluable array of educational, safety, environmental, labor, legal, legislative, public relations and industry-relations products and services.  The association promotes skill, integrity and responsibility within the construction industry.

AGC of Wisconsin selects winners of the BUILD Wisconsin Awards based on craftsmanship, meeting difficult challenges, community and client impact, and sustainable practices and innovation.

The four commercial divisions of the company represented among the award-winning projects are Flooring, Glass & Glazing, Walls & Ceilings, and Doors & Hardware.

Commercial Flooring took part in more than half of the 14 award winners, installing in eight of the locations.  Among the most prominent in their respective communities are Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic in Green Bay, Wis.; Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.; and the Community First Credit Union new corporate office building in Fox Crossing, Wis.

Two state university system projects, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Reeve Union Expansion and University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County, along with a pair of multi-family units, The Lodge II in Madison, Wis., and The Corners at Brookfield (Wis.), also were part of the Commercial Flooring portfolio.  Encapsys, LLC, another distinctive, new corporate headquarters building in Appleton, Wis., also saw H.J. Martin and Son install its flooring.

The Glass & Glazing division of H.J. Martin and Son, recently named to the prestigious ‘Top 50 Glaziers’ list of Glass Magazine, also took part in the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, along with the Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic.  Its other signature projects in 2017 included Lodge Kohler in the Green Bay Packers’ Titletown District, the Falcon Center for Health, Education and Wellness at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, the Uline Corporate Building H2 in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., and the Badger Liquor Tenant Improvement at Schlitz Park in Milwaukee.

The company’s Walls & Ceilings division participated in many of the same projects: Lodge Kohler (for ceilings), Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, and Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic (for both drywall and acoustical ceilings).  It also took part in projects at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Union and at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy in Milwaukee.

Additionally involved in the Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic was the H.J. Martin and Son Doors & Hardware division.

Wyatt Tompkins, a project manager/estimator for H.J. Martin and Son, has been named as a “Rising Young Professional” by The Daily Reporter, a publication covering the Wisconsin construction industry on a statewide basis.

The Daily Reporter bestowed the honor on 22 “outstanding young construction workers” in the state based on the criteria of demonstrated leadership, community contributions and success in achieving positive outcomes early in their career.  Nominees were required to be in the construction industry for eight or fewer years.

An event attended by roughly 200 people was held on March 15, 2018, at the Harley Davidson Rumble Room in Milwaukee to recognize the publication’s first-ever honorees as “Rising Young Professionals.”

Tompkins has grown quickly in his career living by the axiom of, “You can learn a lot by listening.”  As a third-generation construction worker in his family, it’s been especially true for him.  From dinner-table conversations to a lifetime full of interactions, he has learned a lot by listening.

Today, at the age of 27, Tompkins has reached a position of significant responsibility for H.J. Martin and Son.  He is one of the company’s top leaders on the largest drywall project in its history, the new Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Mich.

Having a grandfather, father and uncle who have worked/still work in the construction industry definitely is an advantage if that’s the career path you choose.  And it was the industry selected by Tompkins for his life’s work.

Tompkins began his career in the construction industry in March 2012, working as a truss builder for ProBuild in De Pere, Wis., where his duties included product specifications, measurements and assembly of floor and roof trusses, along with pre-fabricated walls.

A member of the U.S. Army Reserve since November 2010, his career in construction was put on hold in July 2013 when he began a 10-month tour of active duty in Bagram, Afghanistan, as a cargo specialist.

Returning to the Northeast Wisconsin workforce early in 2014, Tompkins took a position framing residential homes for Countryside Construction in Denmark, Wis.  It marked the first time out in the field for him, seeing the actual building process from installing sheetrock, to wrapping a house and installing windows, among other items.

Two years later, while taking courses at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Tompkins joined H.J. Martin and Son in May 2016 as a Project Manager/Estimator.  He subsequently earned an A.A. degree in construction management from NWTC in May 2017.

The latter part of 2017, having earned his stripes for H.J. Martin and Son for more than a year, including some time on a field crew, Tompkins was put into a leadership role on the Marquette General Hospital project.  The $300-plus million project includes a state-of-the-art, 265 bed hospital facility, an 80,000-square foot clinical services building and a parking garage.

Tompkins joined the project at its earliest stages, in August 2016 at nearby K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, where H.J. Martin and Son began panelizing work.

Working directly under Project Manager Craig Nero and On-Site Superintendent Brandon Pecho, who have 33 years and 15 years of construction industry experience, respectively, Tompkins learned a significant amount on this massive project while carrying a high level of responsibility himself.

The drywall contract of H.J. Martin and Son for the Marquette Hospital project includes Gypsum Drywall, Cement Board and Exterior Sheathing; Metal Studs and Framing; Tape and Finish, Sound and Thermal Insulation; Installation of Hollow Metal Door Frames; Lead-lined Drywall and Radiation Protection; and Acoustical Ceiling Systems.

Among the estimated quantities of materials for the entire project are 79,584 linear feet of drywall partitions, 29,188 linear feet of exterior wall, 59,386 square feet of drywall ceilings, 22,866 square feet of lead-lined drywall and 1,935 hollow metal door frame units.

On a daily basis Tompkins walks the entire job site, checking in with company foremen to help resolve field discrepancies.  Resolution can involve anything from referring to CAD files for accurate measurements and revision of construction bulletins, all the way to dialogue with project architects.  Along with estimating other jobs, Tompkins also participates in morning meetings to review Requests For Information (RFI), done in an effort to clear up any subtle ambiguities or gaps in the construction documents.

At age 27, Tompkins admits that his level of responsibility can be intimidating, especially with many of his peers 30-or-more years older.  A hospital project features a high amount of intricate work, he says, and you have to be continuously prepared for detailed inspections.

Tompkins finds that a significant amount of his work involves critical thinking, seeing potential issues in conjunction with the foremen before they occur, along with identifying solutions.  He often runs into items in the field that the project architect does not foresee, and it’s up to Tompkins to resolve the discrepancies on this large-scale project.

Seeing the bigger picture, Tompkins has enjoyed watching all of the different pieces come together on this major project, scheduled for completion the latter part of 2018.  He recognizes that it is essential to coordinate with the other trades on the job site and to help build relationships with the other companies.

“A lot of listening and learning has gotten me to this point,” Tompkins says, adding that with continued personal growth he one day hopes to lead such a large-scale project on his own.

And, with the amount he has grown in his young construction career, who would doubt that will happen?
