Green Bay, Wis. – Jared Miles has started a new position in the Residential division at H.J. Martin and Son as a Residential Measurer. Miles brings valuable experience to his new role having worked as a Residential Flooring Installer since 2018 at the company. In his new position, he will take measurements of client’s residences and construction sites to assist the estimating team in making sure the appropriate quantities and items are ordered, enabling the team to produce an accurate project quote. Furthermore, within his role, he plays a pivotal part in preparing installers for seamless project installations.

“My favorite thing about working for H.J. Martin and Son is the family aspect of it. Everyone comes to work with a positive and friendly attitude, and it makes the work environment a lot easier and less stressful,” said Miles. 

Miles recently completed the Construction Management program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

Schroeder joins the residential division as a Residential Flooring Project Manager. He comes to the company with more than 30 years of flooring expertise, as he was previously employed at EJ Welch Company. Schroeder will work with the residential division team to plan and coordinate residential flooring installations.

Krueger took on the role of Material Handler/Inventory Coordinator, where he will be responsible for assisting the distribution center team in handling, unloading, loading, inspecting, and sorting materials within the warehouse. He was recently employed at Diversified Wood Crafts, Inc. as a CNC Operator after graduating from Gillett High School. Krueger is a second-generation H.J. Martin and Son employee, following in the footsteps of his father, Jeremy Krueger.

How Do I Measure?

Are you looking to install new flooring? Are you ready to purchase your new carpet or hardwood but just don’t know how to measure your space?

H.J. Martin and Son has a whole measurement team, who will come to your home, FOR FREE, and measure your space professionally. However, if you want to have a hand in measuring the room you’re working on, we can help by giving you some basic tips on how to measure your space.

Tools you’ll need:

• Tape Measure
• Calculator
• Notebook
• Pencil

Simple Measurements

A simple way to get a rough measurement for a room is to determine the room’s length and width with a measuring tape. Multiplying the length by the width will help to find your square footage.

Formula: Length (ft.) x Width (ft.) = Square Footage

Example: 10 ft. x 15 ft. = 150 square feet

We know that it is not always that simple, but it can be a great start to determining how much you may be spending on the flooring materials.

Detailed Measurements

In addition to measuring the length and width, you also have to keep track of nooks, crannies, islands, closets, and angles.

For example, if you have an L-shaped room, you will measure the length and width of the long section and multiply, to get that square footage. Then you will do the same to the short end. All you have to do is add up your two sections. (Don’t forget to consider where space overlaps!)

If you have a room that is rather complicated, we suggest drawing a rough sketch of the room’s layout. Then, you can measure each section of flooring and mark it down. This will help keep track of how large each space is.

Here are a few tips to measure rooms like this:

• Split the room into separate areas.
• Measure each area separately (it helps to label each area in your notes)
• Calculate each area’s square footage (LxW)
• Add the calculations together to get a total square footage.

Formula: Area 1 SQFT + Area 2 SQFT + Area 3 SQFT = Total Square Footage

These are very basic ways to calculate square footage. When ordering, we recommend adding 7-10 percent to account for waste (cutting, angles, etc.) so you do not have to buy extra down the road.

• Determine the subfloor if possible. For carpeted rooms, try and lift a corner of the carpet and padding, so we can clearly see the existing subfloor.

Hamning has rejoined the H.J. Martin and Son team as the newest Estimator/Measurer. He previously worked on the Residential Tile crew for four years before going out on his own as a subcontractor for the last 5 years. Hamning will be responsible for flooring and tile project cost estimates.  

Acker is the newest Project Manager in the Residential Flooring Division and will be working remote from the Madison area. For the past 18 years, Acker was previously employed at a flooring retailer where she specialized in Commercial Sales and Design. Acker holds a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture.  

Sorge is the newest Interior Designer at the Green Bay Showroom. He was previously employed at August Haven as an Assistant Market and Sales Manager for 3 years and holds a degree in Interior Design from Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wis.  

Krause has been with the company since 1998. He was chosen for this new role due to his years of experience in flooring installation. Development, training, and scheduling of the company’s residential tile and ceramic team are a few of his responsibilities as a coordinator. He also works in conjunction with the Installation Manager to complete projects according to schedule. This transition will help structure and support the company’s ceramic and residential team to better serve customers.
