H.J. Martin and Son recently participated in a community project that will benefit Northeast Wisconsin residents for years to come, a new facility at the Gordon Bubolz Nature Reserve which opened in January 2018.

Located in Grand Chute, Wis., the Bubolz Nature Preserve has a mission of teaching environmental ethics through education, recreation and conservation while promoting an appreciation of nature.  First opened in 1981, it plays host to approximately 6,000 school children on field trips each year, along with nature enthusiasts of all ages.

Having outgrown its original space and desiring to expand its event space, the Bubolz Nature Preserve undertook three years of planning and construction on a $5.5-million nature center.  At 18,000 square feet, the new facility would be more than triple the size of the center’s former space.

The enhanced nature center was designed to offer additional event space to rent out, to support educational program expansion and to improve the quality of existing recreational opportunities.  Among the new areas is a nature-nook public library and student research center dedicated to environmental education; expanded exhibit spaces; an environmentally themed toddler play area; classrooms; and a refreshed gift shop and café.

Larger spaces for visitors to interact, including meeting rooms, patios, decks and a banquet facility for meetings and events, also were central to this project.

H.J. Martin and Son lent its expertise to two areas of this community-based project, walls & ceilings, along with polished concrete.

The company’s Walls & Ceilings team installed 10,000-square-feet of acoustical ceiling tile, much of it in the banquet and event space.  In conjunction with those areas, H.J. Martin and Son also put four new operable partitions in place.

The 3-4 person installation team of H.J. Martin and Son successfully met an important challenge.  With several ceiling clouds in the new facility, it was important that wood trim be supported at the ceiling cloud perimeters.

A popular flooring trend because of its superior durability, maintenance ease/cost and performance, polished concrete was the choice for 6,000 square feet within the new Gordon Bubolz Nature Reserve.  A national leader in concrete polishing, H.J. Martin and Son utilized one crew of three technicians on this project.

All polished concrete work was completed efficiently over a one-week period just prior to the nature center’s opening, experiencing no major obstacles.

For the second year in a row, H.J. Martin and Son has been selected to the esteemed ‘Top 50 Contractors’ list of Walls & Ceilings magazine.  Widely regarded as the leader in coverage of the walls and ceilings industry, the publication has chosen its annual list since 2013.

H.J. Martin and Son was named to the W&C ‘Top 50’ for the first time in 2016, and for the second straight year is the only Wisconsin-based contractor among the ‘Top 50.’

“We believe what differentiates our Walls and Ceilings division is the experience level of our installers,” says H.J. Martin and Son CEO Edward Martin.  “Many have worked for us for decades and provide excellent work, no matter the type of project.  We thank Walls & Ceilings magazine for recognizing our people.”

The Walls and Ceilings division of H.J. Martin and Son reached its apex this year, hitting full capacity with the largest drywall project in company history, the new Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Mich.  Roughly 120 employees are on the Marquette job site at any one time among 145 divisional workers.

Built under the guidance of general contractor Skanska Closner, the new Marquette General Hospital is a state-of-the-art, 500,000-plus square foot facility with 265 beds. H.J. Martin and Son is handling a wide range of work on the new health structure, including Gypsum Drywall, Cement Board and Exterior Sheathing; Metal Studs and Framing; Tape and Finish; Sound and Thermal Insulation; Installation of Hollow-Metal Door Frames; Lead-lined Drywall and Radiation Protection; and Acoustical Ceiling Systems.

The Drywall division of H.J. Martin and Son – today known as Walls and Ceilings – came into existence in 1984, when Martin went to purchase a forklift from a local drywall company that was liquidating its assets. After a conversation with a former employee of the closed business, he decided to start a new division within H.J. Martin and Son.

The implementation of a drywall division ultimately positioned the company for later success as a national interior contractor. H.J. Martin and Son today works on behalf of many of the best-known retailers in the U.S. Its specialties include commercial metal-stud framing, drywall installation, drywall finishing, acoustical ceilings, specialty ceilings, operable partitions and acoustical wall panels.

Projects of the Walls & Ceilings division include medical facilities, office buildings, sports and entertainment facilities, retail, K-12 and post-secondary educational buildings, casinos and hotels. On the retail front, H.J. Martin and Son regularly handles Walls and Ceilings work for retailers across the nation.

The company also has a long history of walls and ceilings work at iconic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, dating back to 1985 when the stadium’s first-ever luxury suites were built.

“All of these Top 50 contractors have displayed numerous skill-sets that warrant them to be among the best,” wrote Walls & Ceilings Editor John Wyatt in introducing the 2017 winners.  “What makes these companies the best is their thirst to stay progressive and relevant. That means employing new technology, actively looking for new products, competitive employment opportunities, safety departments and so much more. All in all, their talents have sustained their business model and made them industry leaders.”

Walls & Ceilings serves the interior and exterior wall and ceiling industry with the latest news and information regarding building methods, drywall, stucco/EIFS, ceilings, acoustics, steel framing, insulation, plaster technology and regulations in the market.  The publication bills itself as, “The Voice of the Industry since 1938.”

H.J. Martin and Son has expanded its full line of services to Operable Partitions, a new branch of the company’s Walls & Ceilings division. Often referred to as “movable walls,” the product adds flexibility and functionality to a wide array of public spaces.

Operable Partitions commonly are utilized in hospitality venues, including hotels, convention centers, banquet halls and restaurants. They also are used in healthcare complexes and educational facilities of all levels, as well as in government, community and office buildings.

A series of interlocking, flat panels on a track, Operable Partitions offer ease of movement to adjust room size in a matter of minutes, along with acoustical features that minimize outside sound interference within the room.

“More and more, our customers come to us looking for a single-source solution to their construction needs,” says H.J. Martin CEO Edward Martin. “Being able to offer Operable Partitions through our Walls & Ceilings division provides another versatile option in the building process.

“The installation of these large, heavy panels which can be as tall as 30 feet high, is not unlike the installs undertaken by our Glass & Glazing division. We already have the needed equipment to put the panels in place, safely and effectively.”

Operable Partitions are available with a wide selection of panel finishes and color offerings; these include textured vinyls, panel fabrics, wood veneers, vinyl hinges, rigid vinyls and high-pressure laminates. Custom sizing is another advantage of the product, along with ease of maintenance.

Four company divisions working to finish than 50 school projects across Wisconsin in 2015

Green Bay, Wis. – The Commercial divisions of H.J. Martin and Son this month are wrapping up work on educational facilities across Wisconsin as students prepare to head back to the classroom. More than 50 school projects either have been finished or are nearing completion by the specialty contractor.

The projects range from more than 30 local ones in Northeast Wisconsin, to several in western Wisconsin (Arcadia, Black River Falls, Cashton, Menomonie), in the northern part of the state (Irma, Phillips) and on the outer edges of Milwaukee (Hartford, Hartland, Wales). H.J. Martin also has more than a dozen post-secondary facility projects in its 2015 educational portfolio, including four at University of Wisconsin member institutions.

Work has been performed by four different H.J. Martin Commercial divisions: Glass & Glazing, Walls & Ceilings, Flooring and Doors & Hardware. Many of the educational projects entail multiple divisions, utilizing the cross-training of the company’s installation team.

“Educational projects generally require a tight timeline for completion, including some night work,” says CEO Edward Martin. “Our flexible work force allows us to meet any challenge, whether on a school expansion or a remodeling job. We believe that educational facilities have become a recognized strength of our company.

“We wouldn’t be able to do this work without the partnerships we have with a wide range of general contractors and facility managers.”

While many of these projects have been finished, several are scheduled for completion over the next one to two weeks – before the first students arrive for the 2015-16 school year.
