Green Bay, Wis. – H.J. Martin and Son is pleased to welcome Micheal Huntzinger as a CAD Technician for the Glass & Glazing division. Huntzinger joins the team with 11 years of experience in utilizing AutoCAD, demonstrating a comprehensive skill set in designing custom components and creating detailed architectural drawings.  

Huntzinger will play a pivotal role in the Glass & Glazing division, contributing his expertise to various aspects of the design and construction process. Among his duties include creating shop drawings for storefront and curtain walls, compiling product data, supplying fabrication drawings, and utilizing ACIST (an add-on tool for AutoCAD) to provide project management with reports on stock length and glass sizes.

Unveiled in the publication’s May/June 2020 issue, this year’s ‘Top 50 Glaziers’ list of largest contract glazing firms (based on sales volume) ranked H.J. Martin and Son at No. 47.  The company is the only one headquartered in Wisconsin (Green Bay) to make the annual compilation of top glaziers.

A major Glass & Glazing project that contributed to the lofty ranking of H.J. Martin and Son was the new SECURA Insurance Companies headquarters building in Fox Crossing, Wis. HJM handled all of the glass & glazing for the 300,000-square-foot, $98-million structure set on almost 200 acres, where a wall of windows looks out on trees, ponds, wetlands, a cornfield and a solar-panel field.

The exterior glass work revolved around 6-, 7.5- and 10.5-inch curtainwall framing – all of which was painted black with three coats. Other related work included sun shades, Guardian Vision Glass, Guardian Silk Screen Glass, entrances and a glass railing system.

The interior glass work also was extensive. It included all glass entrances and glass sliding entrances, glass walls, Smoke Baffle System glass at stairwells, shower doors, mirrors and restroom stall glass doors, along with aluminum doors and interior door frames.

A crew ranging in size from 10-15 company installers worked on site at the new SECURA headquarters over a 16-month period from March 2018 through June 2019.

H.J. Martin and Son maintains the highest level of equipment and technology within its Glass & Glazing division. Among the company’s equipment is a state-of-the-art, aerial robotic glass/frame handler, which is remote controlled, picking up glass and/or framing units to reduce physical lifting and strain on the company’s field installers. It also utilizes Blue Beam software.

The company has 51 full-time employees in its Glass & Glazing division.

The Glass & Glazing division of H.J. Martin and Son remains a national leader, ranking No. 20 among Glazing and Curtain Wall firms on the ENR list for a second straight year.

Within the state of Wisconsin, H.J. Martin and Son continues to be one of the top specialty contractors.  The company was ranked fifth in the state, behind only Faith Technologies of Menasha (37), J.F. Ahern Co. of Fond du Lac (78), Azco Inc. of Appleton (94) and Grunau Co. of Oak Creek (166).

Green Bay, Wis. – The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin has honored H.J. Martin and Son with a 2018 BUILD Wisconsin Award in the Specialty Contractor-Finishes category for its work on the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.

This marks the 22nd AGC award received by H.J. Martin and Son since the inception of the honor in 2003.  It also continues a streak of 11 consecutive times (2007-14, 2016-18) that the company has been recognized by the AGC of Wisconsin (the awards were not given out in 2015).

The award will be presented to members of the H.J. Martin and Son team at the AGC BUILD Wisconsin Awards Ceremony, Oct. 18 at the new Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Appleton.

“We are proud of our work on this project and thank the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin for recognizing it,” says Edward Martin, president and CEO of H.J. Martin and Son.  “We have a long history of involvement with St. Norbert College, through participation in construction projects and as an involved community partner.  We appreciate the trust shown to us by Miron Construction and Performa.”

The Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center is an ultramodern complex devoted to fitness, wellness and athletics at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.  The 128,000-square-foot expansion and renovation wraps around the original facility, built in 1979, and features a competition-grade swimming pool, large fitness center, and weight-training and performance areas.

Three H.J. Martin and Son divisions participated in the project: Walls & Ceilings, Glass & Glazing, and Commercial Flooring.  Commercial Flooring provided an extensive tile installation, including the swimming-pool deck.  Walls & Ceilings handled exterior and metal-stud framing, drywall and ceilings replacement.  The Glass & Glazing division successfully navigated tight spacing on the building’s east side to install curtain wall with a trapezoidal top, along with laying a Dot Frit silk-screen pattern on the glass surrounding the pool area for aesthetics and solar-control performance.

H.J. Martin and Son owners Edward and Terri Martin also made a significant financial contribution to the construction of the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.  Its completion allowed St. Norbert to bring back its NCAA Division III swimming program; the school had not competed in intercollegiate swimming in a decade.

Performa was the project architect and Miron Construction served as the general contractor.

The four commercial divisions of the company represented among the award-winning projects are Flooring, Glass & Glazing, Walls & Ceilings, and Doors & Hardware.

Commercial Flooring took part in more than half of the 14 award winners, installing in eight of the locations.  Among the most prominent in their respective communities are Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic in Green Bay, Wis.; Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.; and the Community First Credit Union new corporate office building in Fox Crossing, Wis.

Two state university system projects, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Reeve Union Expansion and University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County, along with a pair of multi-family units, The Lodge II in Madison, Wis., and The Corners at Brookfield (Wis.), also were part of the Commercial Flooring portfolio.  Encapsys, LLC, another distinctive, new corporate headquarters building in Appleton, Wis., also saw H.J. Martin and Son install its flooring.

The Glass & Glazing division of H.J. Martin and Son, recently named to the prestigious ‘Top 50 Glaziers’ list of Glass Magazine, also took part in the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, along with the Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic.  Its other signature projects in 2017 included Lodge Kohler in the Green Bay Packers’ Titletown District, the Falcon Center for Health, Education and Wellness at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, the Uline Corporate Building H2 in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., and the Badger Liquor Tenant Improvement at Schlitz Park in Milwaukee.

The company’s Walls & Ceilings division participated in many of the same projects: Lodge Kohler (for ceilings), Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, and Bellin Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Clinic (for both drywall and acoustical ceilings).  It also took part in projects at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Union and at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy in Milwaukee.

The magazine highlighted a signature project of Glass & Glazing, the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.  Glass Magazine featured a photo of the athletic complex (at top of blog) as the lead-in to its presentation of the ‘Top 50 Glaziers’ list.  Beyond the beauty of its glass, the Mulva facility entailed several installation challenges that were expertly met by H.J. Martin and Son.

Two members of H.J. Martin and Son leadership were tapped by Glass Magazine as industry experts in its ‘Top 50 Glaziers’ section. Kevin LaPoint, vice president of the commercial glass and entrance divisions, was quoted on ways that the company has tried to mitigate the overall labor shortage, saying, “We continue to challenge ourselves to increase field productivity with the skilled labor we have.  One way we have done that is through the utilization of a large pre-fabrication team to assemble aluminum frames, making our glaziers more productive on-site.”

H.J. Martin and Son has gone about addressing the labor shortage through direct work with area students in the classroom. By being in the classroom and teaching, students can learn about the trades as viable career paths. If we can get their interest now, we are in the back of their minds upon graduation.

Martin and Son continues to invest in its Glass & Glazing division in order to drive continued growth.  Over the past year, it has acquired one delivery truck, three glass-rack trucks and a state-of-the-art, aerial robotic glass/frame handler.  The handler is remote controlled, picking up glass and/or framing units to reduce physical lifting and strain on the company’s field installers.
