H.J. Martin and Son, a leading provider of flooring and interior finishes, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Gold Medal in the Mixed-Use Development category at the 26th Annual Starnet Design Awards. This prestigious honor recognizes the company’s exceptional work on the Ascent, a 25-story mixed-use tower located in Milwaukee’s East Town neighborhood.

The Ascent is the world’s tallest mass timber structure and spans 493,000 square feet. Completed in just two years, the building offers a blend of residential, commercial, and leisure spaces. Its amenities include a seventh-floor pool, a penthouse level, a 7,000-square-foot retail space, a rooftop bar, a cinema, and more. Designed with sustainability in mind, The Ascent is an innovative development in the heart of Milwaukee, addressing the growing demand for high-rise living while enriching the local community. This project was completed in conjunction with the Architect, Korb, and the General Contractors, C.D. Smith and Catalyst Construction.

H.J. Martin and Son played a pivotal role in this project, installing more than 250,000 square feet of Milliken, Daltile, and Tarkett flooring materials over the span of the 10-month build. The project management team faced a challenge when the initial carpet vendor couldn’t supply materials on time, requiring a reevaluation of their plan to meet the project deadline. Instead of opting for an entirely new carpet from the new vendor, the team collaborated with the new vendor, leveraging their proprietary printing technology. This innovative approach involved printing custom carpet that precisely matched the existing color and design chosen for the spaces.

Given the distinctive architecture of the building, moisture control issues were a concern. Fortunately, the materials used in the new carpet played a role in addressing some of these moisture issues, showcasing the project’s adaptability and success in overcoming challenges.

Through a great relationship with the Starnet preferred vendor and the installation team, the job was completed on time, and exceeded the standards of the developer. Instead of being a one-time transaction, the relationship between the installing contractor, vendor and the developer has evolved into a more continuous, recurring model.

The Starnet Design Awards judging criteria were based on three key factors: creative use of flooring, integration of flooring into the overall space design, and the successful meeting of client objectives. H.J. Martin and Son’s work exceeded expectations in all areas. Starnet is the world’s largest network of full-service independent flooring contractors.  Its 171 locally owned members in North America are committed to the highest standards of excellence in the industry.  H.J. Martin and Son is one of four Starnet members operating in the state of Wisconsin.

The 24th Annual Starnet Design Awards rewarded H.J. Martin and Son top honors in the Hospitality and Public Space category and honorable mention in Education.

The company installed the gold award-winning stunning glass features and specialty flooring at the 125,000-square-foot Resch Expo event and expo center in Green Bay, Wis., in partnership with the general contractor Miron Construction.

Gold category winners were selected by a panel of judges in six categories including corporate, education, healthcare, hospitality and public spaces, mixed-use developments, and Canadian project of the year. The gold category winners were announced on May 17.

The intention of the carpet design was to create a timeless look that could be used for any event, show, or meeting in the area.

The Starnet Design Awards each year celebrate the partnerships between Starnet members, Starnet preferred vendor partners, architects, and designers, while spotlighting the innovative use of flooring in commercial design.

H.J. Martin and Son will receive a crystal trophy as recognition of its selection as the Gold Winner in the Hospitality and Public Space category of the 2022 Starnet Design Awards. Additionally, Starnet is donating $500 to a local charity, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay, selected by H.J. Martin and Son.

Award nominations were judged on three specific criteria:

  • Creative use of flooring
  • Flooring design and integration into the overall space
  • Successful meeting of client objectives
The building structure features a south-facing elevation with a saw-tooth type curtain wall and a sloping roof edge.

The Resch Expo, which opened in January 2021, is a visual highlight of the Lambeau Field Stadium District, with its flawless glass exterior and beautiful architecture. Visitors and locals both admire the new arena’s size, spectacle, and energy. The $93 million structure includes welcoming spaces for tradeshows, meetings, seminars, and concerts, as well as football-related activities.

The carpet tile, ceramic tile, and resilient flooring cover roughly 85,000 square feet. Milliken designed a custom carpet tile exclusively for this project. Daltile, Mapei, Altro, Tarkett Johnsonite, Milliken Carpet Tile, and Uzin were among the Starnet products installed by H.J. Martin and Son. The Veterans Storytelling Wall, a living memorial honoring local veterans, is one of the building’s most notable features. The concession stands have white subway tile, as well as a golden AlysEdwards tile on the bar counter wall. In addition, the concession stands, bar area, kitchens, and pantries have heavy-duty, slip-resistant Altro vinyl safety flooring.

“We take great pride in our commercial flooring division’s Hospitality work, and we’re honored to have the Resch Expo project recognized nationally by Starnet, a flooring industry leader,” says Edward Martin, president and CEO of H.J. Martin and Son. “Without the great craftsmanship of our installers, this recognition would not be possible. They deserve all of the credit!”

The company also received an honorable mention in Education for the new 123,400 square-foot, colorful and vibrant innovative learning center building, West De Pere Intermediate School, located in the Green Bay suburbs.

Designed with a “main street” concept, including large corridors and spaces for gathering, blocks of lockers, and connected learning spaces, the students and teachers are able to experience more of a “neighborhood” feeling.

Starnet is the world’s largest network of full-service independent flooring contractors.  Its 171 locally owned members in North America are committed to the highest standards of excellence in the industry.  H.J. Martin and Son is one of four Starnet members operating in the state of Wisconsin

The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) awarded H.J. Martin and Son as the Commercial Grand Prize winner of the 2021 Five-Star Project of the Year Awards at the Coverings Tradeshow in Orlando, Florida.

H.J. Martin and Son, an NTCA Five-Star Contractor member, was awarded the honor for the tile installation and design work done at the Dick Resch & Family Learning and Conservation Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The building is on the property of the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and is both an event space and nature-based 4K learning center, the Oak Learning Center.

“We are very excited to have our tile installers and overall team recognized by NTCA for this honor,” said David Martin, 4th generation leader at H.J. Martin and Son.

H.J. Martin and Son worked closely with the building’s architect and general contractor Keller Inc. to design the flooring layout. The overall design was based on natural, warm colors inspired by the plumage of local birds.

Ceramic tile flooring was used throughout the building for both its durability and ease of cleaning. Wood-look tile and pebble tile was used on both levels. In the event space, the pebbles create an outline of the main floor while on the lower level, the pebbles were set to create natural pathways for the children to use for wayfinding.

Due to the creative scope of the project, the installation crew worked closely with the designer and project manager to ensure the paths and outlines were cut and installed correctly to create the wanted effect. Detailed drawings and measurements were followed for the ideal outcome.

Bathrooms were also tiled on the floors and on the walls. The upper level had a natural slate-look tile on the walls and the childrens’ bathrooms were done in white subway tile.

Tile brands used include Anatolia, Interceramic, and MSI.

H.J. Martin and Son had a total of four crew members to install the flooring; two for ceramic and two for vinyl. The project took our team approximately a month to complete our scope.

The building is a 13,000-square-foot facility, costing $3.1 million, primarily funded by private donations, including former KI CEO Dick Resch. Other donations came from the Friends of the Wildlife Sanctuary non-profit organization.

H.J. Martin and Son had two winning projects – one commercial, one residential – for the second straight year in the annual Floor Covering Installer magazine Installation Awards. It also marked the fifth year in the past seven that the company has had an award-worthy project.

In the Commercial Project-Resilient category, a team from H.J. Martin and Son was honored for its work on the HSHS St. Vincent Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Center. The company and installer Josh Carlson also were recognized in the Residential Project-Ceramic Tile/Stone category for a New Construction Master Bathroom Shower. For Carlson, it was the second straight year he turned in award-winning work on a residential ceramic project.

“We strongly believe that our installers are craftsmen in the truest sense of the word,” says Edward Martin, president and CEO of H.J. Martin and Son. “Having their work recognized by the readership of Floor Covering Installer on multiple occasions affirms that our people are among the best in the business.

“The St. Vincent pediatric center is eye-catching work that has made a real impact on the community. The work of Josh Carlson on residential shower projects continues to impress.”

The HSHS St. Vincent Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Center project was a renovation of an existing 2,500-square-foot space into a new area with a spacious waiting room, six patient rooms specifically designed for children, and a large play area with interactive games. The refreshed facility was intended to put families at ease, utilizing forest murals at the head of each bed and a Northwoods theme throughout.

The flooring was used to create spaces that look like a forest pathway with large, pebble-like insets and green sheet vinyl to represent grass, complementing the overall nature theme. The floor pattern follows the shape of a few wall graphics in order to extend the pathway visually.

Len Nygren was the lead flooring installer for H.J. Martin and Son on the five-month, phased project. He was joined by Randall Baril, Randy Basten, Sam Pazdera, James White, Dave Cornette and Mike Robenhorst.

“This was a pretty unique project due to the patterns, colors and design,” says Nygren. “It was quite creative because there were no dimensions placed on the (blue)prints. There was just a drawing of a suggestion of what they kind of expected things to look like.

“They gave me all the freedom that I needed and wanted to be creative on my part and to make sure that everything lined up and worked out well.”

A challenge successfully met by the H.J. Martin and Son team was the unique pattern cutting and ensuring that pattern lines lined up to wall graphics. To illustrate, there is a path cut into the hallway that meets up to a path in the tree graphic on the wall; these line up to create Trompe l’oeil.

Nygren reflects on the project and shares who gave him a high-five for his work in the Floor Covering Installer video below.

Carlson completed the New Construction Master Bathroom Shower in two phases over a 10-day period. The finished product delivered to the client of H.J. Martin and Son had a spa-like feel with luxury features that included steamers, benches and spaciousness.

“The complexities of this project were the large chairs that were in it,” explains Carlson. “That’s something we don’t see a whole lot of.”

According to Carlson, the shower was perfectly centered down the middle, with everything flowing out from there. The two large, lounge benches were the identical size and needed to look exactly the same.

The perfect installation was achieved by the installer starting in the center and wrapping the tile products all around.

Local supplier Bay Area Granite and Marble (BAGM) fabricated the quartz for the top of the benches. After Carlson prepped the shower, BAGM templated the tops/seats, a process that took roughly one week.

Carlson returned to the home to assist Bay Area Granite and Marble with placement of the seats/benches. He then spent seven days to tile and grout the shower.

He is most honored that the FCI Installation Award is chosen by his peers. “It means a lot that people who see a lot of these and understand what goes into them – how much work it really is (voted it the winner),” says Carlson. “The details are what makes a good installation.”

Carlson highlights and details the winning project in the Floor Covering Installer video below.

Previous individual winners of the Floor Covering Installer Installation Awards from H.J. Martin and Son are installers Josh Carlson, in 2019 for his work on a Master Bathroom Shower project in De Pere, Wis.; Rob Pomeroy, in 2017 for his work at Camera Corner Connecting Point in Green Bay, Wis.; John Lancor, in 2016 for his work on the Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology Center in Appleton, Wis.; and Nick Mooren, in 2014 for his work at the Madison (Wis.) Central Public Library.
