H.J. Martin and Son is not only committed to their customers, vendors, and employees, but to the growth of their local community as well. Through development within the Military Avenue Business District (where H.J. Martin and Son is headquartered) and other areas within the Green Bay community, H.J. Martin and Son has revitalized areas that sat vacant for years, created jobs, increased property values, inspired economic health and lead with an opportunistic mindset.

The following projects have been developed within the past few years. These are the combined efforts of a number of people, and we are proud of the impact already seen within our community.

Multiple Tenants – 1616 West Mason Street, Green Bay, WI

Cub Foods occupied the 75,000 square foot building until it closed in 2009, and then the building sat vacant for three years. H.J. Martin and Son’s real estate entity purchased the property in February of 2012 and ultimately lead a three-tenant buildout.

  • Burlington – A national department store retailer that occupies approximately 40,000 square feet and opened in October of 2013.
  • Michaels – A national retailer specializing in arts, hobby, and home supplies that occupies approximately 25,000 square feet and opened in April of 2014.
  • Petco – A national retailer specializing in the health and wellness of pets; H.J. Martin and Son built a demising wall to accommodate Burlington’s request for less square footage and added Petco to the approximately 16,000 square feet of existing space and opened in August of 2022.

Bellin Health Ambulatory Surgery Center905 Waube Lane, Ashwaubenon, WI

This property was originally home to Menards, which closed in 2012 and then sat vacant for four years. H.J. Martin and Son’s real estate entity purchased the property in 2016 and formed a partnership with Bellin Memorial Hospital in conjunction with the Strohschein Family in 2019. Bellin Hospital then announced its plans in December of 2021, to build a five-story, 262,000 square-foot surgery center.

Old Shopko & Outparcel – 216 Military Ave., Green Bay, WI

The very first Shopko (store #1) was built back in the early 1960s and remained in business until the chain began closing its stores in 2019. This property, along with Superior Liquor, was purchased by H.J. Martin and Son’s real estate entity in March 2020. This 125,468-square-foot Shopko building remained vacant for a year while the search for new tenants continued.

In Fall of 2021, a buildout at Shopko was completed for two tenants: H.J. Martin and Son (for a hands-on & in-class training facility and warehouse space) and Bellin Memorial Hospital (offices, storage, and an area for servicing home medical equipment).

Moving forward, there are continued initiatives for the ongoing development of the outparcels.

Planet Fitness – 1640 West Mason Street, Green Bay, WI

This 47,762 square foot building was home to Toys “R” Us, which closed in June of 2018 and then sat vacant for nearly two years. H.J. Martin and Son’s real estate entity purchased the property in April of 2020 with the plan to find a tenant and complete a buildout. That tenant was Planet Fitness, who previously occupied space just further west on West Mason Street. H.J. Martin and Son was the general contractor for the buildout and Planet Fitness opened in December of 2020. In preparation for future outparcel development, a year later, in December of 2021, the subdivision allowed for two outparcels, which eventually became Arby’s and Scooter’s Coffee.

Arby’s – 1630 West Mason Street, Green Bay, WI

This outparcel was an opportunity to bring business to an otherwise unused area of the Planet Fitness parking lot. In August of 2021, H.J. Martin and Son signed a long-term lease agreement with Arby’s. Just 6 months later, construction began, with H.J. Martin and Son serving as the general contractor. The 26,825 square foot fast food restaurant opened in September of 2022 and is quickly living up to its rank as “second-largest sandwich restaurant brand in the world.”

Scooter’s Coffee – 1632 West Mason Street, Green Bay, WI

Hand in hand with the Arby’s development was the opportunity to bring in Scooter’s Coffee to occupy additional unused Planet Fitness parking lot space and bring more business into the area. The long-term lease agreement was signed in August of 2021 and construction began in Spring of 2022. The coffee shop, named with a nod to keep customers happy by helping them “scoot in and scoot out,” opened in August of 2022, one month prior to the Arby’s opening.

Mangiare – 121 North Adams Street, Green Bay, WI

121 North Adams Street has been home to a number of downtown Green Bay businesses over the years, most notably Candlestick Lounge (also referred to as “The Candlestick”). H.J. Martin purchased the building and served as the General Contractor to overhaul the building. The space is currently home to Mangiare, an Italian restaurant known for its classic Italian menu and expansive wine list. Prior to opening, H.J. Martin and Son was involved from both a design and contractor standpoint. Working with the owner, H.J. Martin and Son’s own interior designer provided direction and insight on finishes and overall aesthetics in the restaurant, while the the company’s commercial flooring and walls & ceilings divisions completed the remainder of the updates.

Other Notable Projects

H.J. Martin and Son has a long history of development, beyond the projects noted above. Additional development within the area includes the old S & L Chrysler building (a car dealership) located at 225 Military Avenue, Green Bay, which is now Bay Area Diamond Company (specializing in engagement rings and other fine jewelry) and the H.J. Martin and Son Floorcare division. Western Lanes, a bowling alley located at 904 South Taylor Street in Green Bay, was redeveloped into Rasmussen University, an educational facility with more than 50 career-focused programs in nursing, business, technology, and more.

If you are interested in partnering for future development within the area, please contact David Martin at david@hjmartin.com or 920-490-3104.

Giving back to our community has been a mission of H.J. Martin and Son since the day our business opened. The company and the Martin family have tried to do as much as they can to support not just the employees, but the causes they are passionate about.

Of the many different causes and foundations we support, those that look to advance breast cancer awareness, research and treatment are some of those closest to our hearts. This disease is present in every one in eight women according to the Ribbon of Hope Foundation.

For the month of October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, H.J. Martin and Son has done a few different things for our team to participate, with an effort to support breast cancer awareness.

To launch our initiatives this year, we purchased Pink Ribbon welcome mats produced by Carpet One Floor and Home. The mats are made and sold with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Carpet One has been selling the Pink Ribbon mats for over a decade, helping fund over 8,700 hours of research.

Further showing our support, we rallied as many of our coworkers as possible to Wear Pink on October 9th for an (early) Wear Pink Day! This is a widely recognized day for awareness and fundraising (October 19th) and for us was a great way to let our employees and customers truly know how much we care about this cause. Additionally, we had cookies for our customers to enjoy and the designers handed out some of the mats to a few of their clients!

Lastly, we participated for the second year running in the B.R.A.s of the Bay Breast Reconstruction Awareness initiative. The event has a number of local businesses decorate bras with over-the-top creativity. The bras are then displayed at the businesses for the month of October and are then brought to the event hosted by Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic.

This year our team members Madison, Taylor, Emily and Allison decorated our bra in the theme of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, with the bra decorated with tile from our showroom depicting the Yellow Brick Road, Red Poppies and the Emerald City. We even had the ruby red slippers and Toto!

All of the bras were voted on and some were even purchased during the B.R.A.s of the Bay event on October 18th to support the Ribbon of Hope Foundation and Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day USA Initiative. We were very excited to learn that someone has purchased our bra this year, and the proceeds will be donated to the cause!

Overall, we are very grateful to have so many employees who are passionate about raising funds and awareness for this cause.

H.J. Martin and Son was honored earlier this month for its ongoing support of military veterans through employment opportunities and community programs.

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Wisconsin presented H.J. Martin and Son with its 2018 Employer of the Year Award in the Medium Employer category June 8 at the joint opening session of the 90th Annual DAV State Convention. David Martin and other H.J. Martin and Son representatives attended the award ceremony at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Green Bay to accept the award.

The company was saluted for its “outstanding accomplishments” in working with veterans, particularly with regard to hiring.  The award winner is chosen on the basis of three factors: 1) a company’s efforts to recruit and hire veterans; 2) a company’s efforts to retain and develop veterans; and 3) a company’s involvement in the community, with an emphasis on initiatives focused around veterans.

This is truly a great honor for H.J. Martin and Son. Not only is hiring and supporting veterans the right thing to do, but we have also found them to be exemplary employees. Their work ethic is second to none and they consistently are great representatives of the company. We thank DAV Wisconsin for recognizing H.J. Martin and Son.

In nominating H.J. Martin and Son for the DAV Wisconsin Employer of the Year Award, Local Veterans’ Employment Representative (LVER) Derek Jablonicky of the Office of Veteran Employment Services in De Pere, Wis., cited the company’s willingness to support veterans, who face serious barriers to employment.  H.J. Martin and Son has worked closely with his office since at least 2013 to identify positions that will utilize the experience, professionalism and leadership skills of veterans, according to Jablonicky.

The result of the partnership between DAV Wisconsin and the company, says Jablonicky, is that nearly 60 veterans have been hired due to direct referrals.  He also cited the fact that 11 percent of H.J. Martin and Son’s workforce is comprised of veterans.

Several illustrations of the community involvement of H.J. Martin and Son in veterans-related projects also were mentioned by Jablonicky in nominating the company.  He specifically cited its work with Building for the Bravest, a national program which builds custom-designed smart homes for catastrophically injured American service members, and with the “Jerry Home Project,” a community effort to help a disabled Vietnam veteran build a replacement home for one that had its roof collapse and subsequently was destroyed by rain.

“It is with sincere conviction that I nominate H.J. Martin and Son for the (DAV) Employer of the Year Award,” Jablonicky wrote in his nomination, continuing, “Their dedicated service of showing veteran preference, willingness to take care of the broader veteran population and the continued honor they show to their families and community (make) H.J. Martin and Son truly the Employer of the Year.”

H.J. Martin and Son continues to seek veterans for employment. Available opportunities can be found at http://www.hjmartin.com/company/employment/.

H.J. Martin and Son recently participated in a community project that will benefit Northeast Wisconsin residents for years to come, a new facility at the Gordon Bubolz Nature Reserve which opened in January 2018.

Located in Grand Chute, Wis., the Bubolz Nature Preserve has a mission of teaching environmental ethics through education, recreation and conservation while promoting an appreciation of nature.  First opened in 1981, it plays host to approximately 6,000 school children on field trips each year, along with nature enthusiasts of all ages.

H.J. Martin and Son installed 10,000 SF of acoustical ceiling tile while meeting the challenge of ceiling clouds. H.J. Martin and Son
H.J. Martin and Son installed 10,000 SF of acoustical ceiling tile while meeting the challenge of ceiling clouds.

Having outgrown its original space and desiring to expand its event space, the Bubolz Nature Preserve undertook three years of planning and construction on a $5.5-million nature center.  At 18,000 square feet, the new facility would be more than triple the size of the center’s former space.

The enhanced nature center was designed to offer additional event space to rent out, to support educational program expansion and to improve the quality of existing recreational opportunities.  Among the new areas is a nature-nook public library and student research center dedicated to environmental education; expanded exhibit spaces; an environmentally themed toddler play area; classrooms; and a refreshed gift shop and café.

Larger spaces for visitors to interact, including meeting rooms, patios, decks and a banquet facility for meetings and events, also were central to this project.

H.J. Martin and Son lent its expertise to two areas of this community-based project, walls & ceilings, along with polished concrete.

Four new operable partitions were installed. H.J. Martin and Son
Four new operable partitions were installed.

The company’s Walls & Ceilings team installed 10,000-square-feet of acoustical ceiling tile, much of it in the banquet and event space.  In conjunction with those areas, H.J. Martin and Son also put four new operable partitions in place.

The 3-4 person installation team of H.J. Martin and Son successfully met an important challenge.  With several ceiling clouds in the new facility, it was important that wood trim be supported at the ceiling cloud perimeters.

A popular flooring trend because of its superior durability, maintenance ease/cost and performance, polished concrete was the choice for 6,000 square feet within the new Gordon Bubolz Nature Reserve.  A national leader in concrete polishing, H.J. Martin and Son utilized one crew of three technicians on this project.

All polished concrete work was completed efficiently over a one-week period just prior to the nature center’s opening, experiencing no major obstacles.

H.J. Martin and Son has continued to demonstrate its commitment to Northeast Wisconsin through multi-faceted involvement in the new Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics clinic, slated to open in late July 2017.  Designed to be the premier sports-medicine practice in the region, the 52,000-square-foot facility is part of the Green Bay Packers’ “Titletown District,” a destination venue adjacent to iconic Lambeau Field.

The company and its owners, Edward and Terri Martin, are the benefactors of the “Edward & Terri Martin Family Atrium, sponsored by H.J. Martin & Son, Inc.”  The Martin Family Atrium will be the first impression of an estimated 40,000 annual visitors to Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics.  Multiple company divisions also are participating in the building’s construction.

The Martin Family Atrium will greet entering patients, allowing them to register efficiently.  It also will serve as a comfortable lounge for those waiting on patients and athletes.  The center additionally has the ability to meet community, educational and conference space needs.

“The Edward & Terri Martin Family Atrium is the entryway to Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics,” says Bellin Health President & CEO George Kerwin.  “We’ve designed everything in this facility with athletes in mind.  Our commitment is to bring Green Bay a state-of-the-art facility, rapid access, the finest diagnostic technology available and expert medical care all centered on

Bellin Health building, H.J. Martin and Son

individual athletes.  Our goal is to get them back to what they love – faster.  Edward and Terri Martin’s support of these services visibly demonstrates their commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of people living in our community.”

The Martin Family Atrium will feature an open-design concept, with exposed structure and mechanical systems similar to those at Lambeau Field.  There will be interior brick accent walls, along with maple hardwood wall accents.

A notable characteristic of the center is a large, glass wall which faces Lambeau Field.  Custom artwork by Elevate97, a Green Bay-based design and branding firm, will include a display case, a “running man” and soles on the walls of new patient check-in kiosks.

The approximately 3,000-square-foot lobby also will provide access to state-of-the-art conference/community rooms.

“Our family has been involved with Bellin Health and the Bellin Health Foundation for more than 35 years, going back to my father, Patrick,” says Edward Martin, president and CEO of H.J. Martin and Son.  “We want to support this community which has given so much to us, and we believe that one of the keys to a strong community is quality healthcare.

“This facility will have the latest technical advancements for orthopedics and a focus on patient care.  To have the company name associated with this project seemed like a natural fit and will be a source of great pride.”

H.J. Martin and Son also has hands-on involvement throughout Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics.  Four company divisions worked on the project: Walls & Ceilings, Glass & Glazing, Doors & Hardware and Commercial Flooring.

Walls & Ceilings provided metal-stud framing, gypsum board and acoustical ceilings, while Glass & Glazing handled all of the building’s interior and exterior glass and curtain wall.  The company additionally furnished its custom doors and hardware.

The commercial flooring division of H.J. Martin and Son installed the wide variety of flooring products needed within a health center, including carpet, resilient flooring and ceramic tile.

Bellin Health has served Green Bay and Northeast Wisconsin for more than 100 years.  Today, it is an integrated health-care delivery system, comprised of hospitals, medical centers, sports medicine and rehabilitation facilities, fitness centers, a nursing college, medical-equipment sales and in-home care.

Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics will be geared towards injury prevention, performance improvement, and treatment and therapy for injuries.  It will include laboratory, x-ray and MRI areas, along with sports nutrition and sports psychology services.

The facility will be headlined by long-time Green Bay Packers team physician Patrick McKenzie MD, along with leading foot/ankle specialist Robert Anderson MD, James Spears MD, James Ebben MD and Gil Freeman MD, who will be joined by other top sports-medicine specialists.  In all, approximately 80 Bellin staff members will be working on site.

Miron Construction is the general contractor for Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, while Somerville Inc. was the project architect.

Combining its corporate commitments to the community and sustainability, H.J. Martin and Son has partnered with Cellcom’s Green Gifts program.  Through Green Gifts, the local wireless company donates proceeds from its cell phone recycling program to area organizations and programs dedicated to environmental sustainability.

H.J. Martin and Son donated 118 total cell phones (plus cases and accessories) to Green Gifts, which is an annual initiative in existence since 2010.  Cellcom has donated more than $180,000 through the program over the last six years.

“Sustainability is at the core of our daily operations,” says H.J. Martin and Son President and CEO Edward Martin.  “To be able to turn our old cell phones into a benefit to the community while being environmentally conscious is a win-win.  We can’t thank Cellcom enough for allowing us to participate in this great program.”

Phones from Green Gifts are sent for recycling, and the resultant funds are put towards local grants.  Groups which are doing environmentally sustainable projects can apply for the funds through Cellcom.  Past projects funded have included making a duck pond at Bay Beach Amusement Park handicap accessible.

“Cellcom’s Green Gifts program would not be possible without consumers and businesses starting the process and making the decision to recycle their old cell phones.  We appreciate the contribution of H.J. Martin to the program and applaud their commitment to the environment,” says Brighid Riordan, director of public affairs for Cellcom.  “Anyone can contribute to this program, simply by dropping off old, broken or unused phones at any Cellcom retail location.”

As part of its commitment to preserving the environment, H.J. Martin and Son is accredited for Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and as Green Associates by Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED).  It also works with Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) to recycle old carpet and carpet pad, disposing of it in a responsible manner.

The company’s sustainability efforts were recognized in April 2015, when it was honored with a bronze Environmental Stewardship Award from Starnet.  Starnet is the world’s leading commercial flooring partnership, comprised of more than 170 locally owned, full-service flooring contractors.

Cellcom is a wireless company that provides nationwide service for its customer base throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, with nearly 70 retail and agent locations.  The company has a long-standing reputation for extraordinary customer care and being a strong community partner.  A subsidiary of Nsight, Cellcom is part of a family of companies offering complete telecommunications services.

Faced with the same labor shortage as many construction-related companies, H.J. Martin and Son is aggressively involving itself in educational opportunities to address future employment needs.

The most recent initiative is the WORX class at West De Pere (Wis.) High School. Open to any interested freshman, sophomore or junior student at the school, WORX (West De Pere Occupational Research and Xploration) is intended to expose students to multiple construction-, manufacturing- and transportation-related trades. Throughout the semester, a variety of career areas are explored, including a related, hands-on activity or project.

H.J. Martin and Son Foreman Bruce Litke recently spent two weeks in the WORX classroom of 19 students. He assisted the students with units on steel-wall framing, drywall installation and finishing, as well as ceiling systems.

“Hands-on experience is key to this program,” says Chris Glinski, Tech Ed Teacher at West De Pere High School. “The reaction of the students to what Bruce was teaching them was impressive, and it exposed them to a whole new field that they previously didn’t understand. We really appreciate the partnership with H.J. Martin.”

Glinski added that one student, after the first day H.J. Martin had been in the classroom, remarked to him that what he had learned was “awesome” and that he might want to pursue a career in drywall.

Agenda 2017 of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is a series of initiatives that support college and career readiness upon completion of high school. West De Pere High School implemented the WORX course in an effort to give its students hands-on exposure to potential career paths outside of a four-year college.

H.J. Martin and Son proactively initiated the idea of coming into the classroom through dialogue with the West De Pere Technology Education Program. After putting the specifics into place and securing the needed materials, the company’s initial involvement came during the second trimester of the 2015-16 school year.

H.J. Martin and Son believes that providing students with a meaningful, hands-on experience, there is hope to plant a seed early that there are high-quality jobs within the construction profession. H.J. Martin has a number of highly skilled employees who have been with the company for decades, but who we expect will retire in the coming years.

Our goal is to build our next-generation workforce, and the best way to do that is to expose students to who we are and what we do.

H.J. Martin will be returning to the West De Pere classroom during the third trimester, which started on Feb. 29, 2016.

The Education rooms at the two locations of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay received new flooring in November, courtesy of H.J. Martin and Son. Replacing the original flooring which was 15 years old, the new flooring was the centerpiece of a renovation of the two learning areas, which included new color schemes and paint.

“Our Education rooms have a fresh feeling, thanks to H.J. Martin,” says Sylvia DuBeau, senior director of development at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay. “It almost feels like a new space, and it’s gotten the kids excited about learning.”

The Education rooms have a multi-purpose function in serving elementary school-aged children in the Green Bay area. Much of the activity is centered around homework, reading and computers. Hands-on science projects also are undertaken within the space, which necessitated a flooring product that could withstand messiness on occasion.

Broadloom carpet and Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring were chosen for their durability and ease of care.

Interface Caribbean Classic carpet was installed at both locations. At the Bruce W. Nagel Clubhouse on the west side of Green Bay, Centiva LVP in two colors and with an accent, was utilized. At the Thomas H. Lutsey Clubhouse on the city’s east side, Mannington Nature’s Paths was the choice.

In all, 750 square feet of LVP and 215 square yards of carpet were installed between the two locations. Two H.J. Martin installers completed the project over a two-day period in early November.

“The work that the Boys & Girls Club does within the community, helping to educate our youth and developing leaders, is vital,” says David Martin, Fourth Generation at H.J. Martin. “It is an honor to carry on the long-time support of my father, Edward Martin, for the Boys & Girls Club.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay serves approximately 400 children per day, five days a week, in the Education rooms of its two locations.

“It was a wonderful surprise when David Martin offered to do this for the Boys & Girls Club,” says DuBeau. “Everyone we worked with from H.J. Martin, especially Rachel Weber, was amazing and really helpful. We are truly grateful.”

The employees of H.J. Martin and Son have banded together to provide two Northeast Wisconsin families with the Christmas they otherwise would not be able to afford. Teaming with House of Hope, a shelter for women ages 18-24 who are homeless and either pregnant or parenting, the company coordinated the Adopt A Family effort.

Lists of needs for each of the two families were hung in the lunch room at H.J. Martin’s locations in Green Bay and Neenah, Wis.

The list of Family One included everyday clothing items for a mother, 22, and two children, along with family board games and movies, household items, books, craft and art supplies, a skateboard, Lego blocks and bath toys.

Family Two consisted of a 19-year old mother and baby due in mid-February 2016. Beyond everyday clothing and household items for the expectant mom, their list was made up primarily of baby items such as a car seat, a bouncer seat, an infant tub, infant toys, an infant snowsuit and other newborn clothing.

The company-wide, community initiative began in early November. H.J. Martin employees could donate new gifts for wrapping, gently used items or cash. Even a small monetary donation was welcomed, with the cash utilized to purchase any list items not received.

“Our employees really are to be applauded for the way they stepped up to provide these two in-need families with a Christmas that otherwise would have been impossible for them,” says Nicole Jensky, director of marketing for H.J. Martin. “No matter the contribution, it helped to impact the lives of a pair of young mothers in our community and their children.”

On Dec. 14, the vast majority of items on the two families’ lists were delivered by H.J. Martin staff in time for distribution at Christmas. Shannon Wienandt, director of House of Hope, and case managers for the shelter were delighted to receive the treasure trove of gifts.

“We can’t thank the employees of H.J. Martin enough,” says Wienandt. “You hear the phrase, ‘Making a difference’ all of the time – this truly is making a difference for two of the homeless families we serve. We were absolutely delighted to receive all of the gifts and to be able to make Christmas special, especially for the children to whom it means so much.”

House of Hope is a Green Bay-based, non-profit organization that provides programming, services and shelter to homeless women, ages 18-24 who are pregnant or parenting, and their children.
