For the 26th time since 2006, H.J. Martin and Son has been honored with the 2024 Build Wisconsin Award by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin. The award was given in the Specialties Contractor – Finishes category for the work completed at the Bellin Surgery and Specialties Center.

Located at 905 Waube Lane, this five-story, 270,000-square-foot facility brings together multiple healthcare specialties under the Bellin Health name. The addition of this new center allows Bellin to lower healthcare costs by 20% to 40% compared to hospital-based surgical facilities. Jim Dietsche, Bellin Health’s Executive Vice President and CFO, emphasized the organization’s commitment to reducing healthcare expenses. Additionally, the facility has added 450 jobs to the Green Bay area, comprising both new hires and relocated employees.

The Waube Lane property holds special significance for H.J. Martin and Son and the Martin family, as they have owned the site since Menards closed in the fall of 2016. Centrally located off I-41, the property was described by H.J. Martin and Son President and CEO Edward Martin as a “diamond in the rough.” Martin noted, “The Waube Lane site is an entryway to Lambeau Field. You have to have a vision and a use for it.” That vision became a reality when the Martins were approached by Bellin Health to purchase the property.

In partnership with general contractor Miron and architect HGA, H.J. Martin and Son contributed to the project through several divisions: Glass, Walls & Ceilings, Commercial Flooring, and Fixtures, Furniture, and Equipment (FF&E). Trade crews were on-site for two years, completing a wide range of tasks. The drywall and ceiling teams handled steel stud framing, drywall installation, and ceiling grids, while glaziers installed 34,000 square feet of interior and exterior glass. Meanwhile, FF&E teams installed patient room furniture, waiting area seating, and gym equipment for the orthopedics department.

Coordination was a key element of the project’s success. The steel stud framing team worked closely with other trades to ensure framing was completed ahead of schedule. This allowed spaces to be topped out, insulated, and fire-sprayed before other trades began, creating a streamlined and efficient workflow. During the cold Wisconsin months, the drywall team collaborated with the general contractor to establish temporary heated zones, enabling steady progress without compromising quality.

Flooring crews installed more than 180,000 square feet of carpet, tile, and welded sheet vinyl. The orthopedics area featured intricate designs with multiple colors of vinyl, requiring precise heat welding to create seamless finishes. Additionally, 12 operating rooms, the OR core, and a large sterilization room were outfitted with Altro White Rock hygienic wall cladding, which demanded certified installation expertise.

H.J. Martin and Son is proud to be recognized by the AGC of Wisconsin for its work on the Bellin Surgery and Specialties Center. As a long-standing leader in construction, the company remains committed to delivering quality craftsmanship and impactful projects that benefit the communities it serves.

The Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin is the leading professional trade association for the commercial construction industry in the state of Wisconsin. Known as the voice of the construction industry, this chapter of the AGC of America provides its members with a comprehensive and invaluable array of educational, safety, environmental, labor, legal, legislative, public relations and industry-relations products and services. H.J. Martin and Son, a leading provider of flooring and interior finishes, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Gold Medal in the Mixed-Use Development category at the 26th Annual Starnet Design Awards. This prestigious honor recognizes the company’s exceptional work on the Ascent, a 25-story mixed-use tower located in Milwaukee’s East Town neighborhood.

The Ascent is the world’s tallest mass timber structure and spans 493,000 square feet. Completed in just two years, the building offers a blend of residential, commercial, and leisure spaces. Its amenities include a seventh-floor pool, a penthouse level, a 7,000-square-foot retail space, a rooftop bar, a cinema, and more. Designed with sustainability in mind, The Ascent is an innovative development in the heart of Milwaukee, addressing the growing demand for high-rise living while enriching the local community. This project was completed in conjunction with the Architect, Korb, and the General Contractors, C.D. Smith and Catalyst Construction.

H.J. Martin and Son played a pivotal role in this project, installing more than 250,000 square feet of Milliken, Daltile, and Tarkett flooring materials over the span of the 10-month build. The project management team faced a challenge when the initial carpet vendor couldn’t supply materials on time, requiring a reevaluation of their plan to meet the project deadline. Instead of opting for an entirely new carpet from the new vendor, the team collaborated with the new vendor, leveraging their proprietary printing technology. This innovative approach involved printing custom carpet that precisely matched the existing color and design chosen for the spaces.

Given the distinctive architecture of the building, moisture control issues were a concern. Fortunately, the materials used in the new carpet played a role in addressing some of these moisture issues, showcasing the project’s adaptability and success in overcoming challenges.

Through a great relationship with the Starnet preferred vendor and the installation team, the job was completed on time, and exceeded the standards of the developer. Instead of being a one-time transaction, the relationship between the installing contractor, vendor and the developer has evolved into a more continuous, recurring model.

The Starnet Design Awards judging criteria were based on three key factors: creative use of flooring, integration of flooring into the overall space design, and the successful meeting of client objectives. H.J. Martin and Son’s work exceeded expectations in all areas. Starnet is the world’s largest network of full-service independent flooring contractors.  Its 171 locally owned members in North America are committed to the highest standards of excellence in the industry.  H.J. Martin and Son is one of four Starnet members operating in the state of Wisconsin.

Floor Covering Installer (FCI) magazine has recognized H.J. Martin and Son with an installation award in the category of Commercial Resilient. This marks the 10th consecutive year the company has been awarded in the commercial or residential categories.

The FCI’s annual Installation Awards are given to the most innovative installers and interesting flooring installations across a range of residential and commercial flooring categories.

This year’s winning entry was the resilient installation at Wrightstown Elementary School. Over the course of 13 months, crews installed more than 46,000 square feet of carpet and resilient flooring. The resilient flooring presented a unique hurdle with its offset staggered pattern, requiring careful planning to achieve both an appealing look and a perfect fit for the space. Aligning the long lines of colored resilient with the painted soffits demanded precision.

To ensure flawless alignment, the installers diligently self-leveled every square foot of flooring before laying down the resilient and carpet tiles. The phased installation required consistency, so the same skilled installers were deployed for each stage to maintain quality and continuity. Despite these challenges, the crew’s expertise and dedication prevailed, resulting in a successful project completion that met the school’s requirements.

One outstanding feature is the use of multiple colors in a block pattern for the resilient flooring. This creative design choice added a striking visual appeal to the space, making it stand out from conventional installations. The interplay of colors not only created a visually engaging environment but also helped define different sections and zones within the school. “{The colors} all had a purpose to make it easier on the kids,” says installer David Stevenson.

H.J. Martin and Son is a dedicated interior finishes contractor with a continued streak of excellence within the education sector. In 2022-2023 alone, H.J. Martin and Son crews completed multiple installations at schools and higher education institutions throughout Wisconsin. In an interview with FCI Magazine’s Managing Editor, Beth Miller, Stevenson says, “It’s all about showing the customers what’s possible. H.J. Martin and Son always goes above and beyond. If you can dream it, we can do it.”

Green Bay, Wis. – In recognition of the craftsmanship and dedication to excellence, H.J. Martin and Son has been honored with the 2023 BUILD Wisconsin Award by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin. The award was given in the Specialties Contractor-Finishes category for the work on the EAA Youth Education Center project, located on the iconic EAA grounds in Oshkosh, WI.

This year marks the 25th AGC award given to H.J. Martin and Son since the program’s inception in 2003. This milestone attests to the company’s unwavering commitment to delivering excellence and it’s significant contributions to Wisconsin’s construction landscape.

For more than seven decades, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and its events have been a cornerstone of Wisconsin’s vibrant tourism industry. Beyond the thrilling aerial displays, the EAA has contributed substantially to the state’s economy, generating millions of dollars and fostering employment opportunities. This legacy inspired the inception of Project 21: Museum Revitalization, a transformative endeavor that has breathed new life into the EAA Museum, situated at 3000 Poberezny Road in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Central to this revitalization is the two-story, 30,000 sq. ft. expansion known as the Eagle Hangar. This facility serves as an innovative educational hub, encompassing both the Youth Education Center and the state-of-the-art Pilot Proficiency Center. Working hand in hand with general contractor Ghidorzi, H.J. Martin and Son played a pivotal role in this transformation, responsible for the installation of walls and ceilings, flooring, doors and hardware, and operable partitions.

A distinctive hallmark of the project’s success lies in the creative application of materials. Vibrant rubber flooring in a myriad of colors and intricate three-dimensional tiles create a creative and imaginative ambiance. Operable partitions were used to allow the space to be transformed from a large gathering space into 5 learning rooms. The doors & hardware division installed plastic laminate wood doors that are finger print proof to ensure a space that can withstand heavy traffic.

Green Bay, Wis. – In the spring of 2022, H.J. Martin and Son completed the 18,000 square feet of ceilings throughout the second floor of the 7-story U.S. Venture Center in the heart of Titletown, WI. The entire second floor houses CliftonLarsonAllen LLP (CLA), a firm that specializes in delivering integrated wealth advisory, outsourcing, audit, tax, and consulting services. For their work as the ceiling/Acoustical subcontractor, H.J. Martin and Son was awarded the Ceilings and Interior Systems Construction Association’s (CISCA) 2023 Construction Excellence Award.

The CISCA Construction Excellence Award submissions are judged on Presentation, Technical Quality, Quality of the Job, Complexity of the Job (Installation), Complexity of the Job (Manufacturing Process), Job Conditions, and the Overall Finished Product. H.J. Martin and Son received the award in the smaller than 50,000 square feet subcategory within the Contractor category. The general contractor on the project was Miron Construction, the Architect was BDH, with H.J. Martin and Son serving as the installing contractor.

While the ceiling was a standard 9’ – 10’, the installation was complex in that there were varying angels for the wood slat installation and challenges with the angels for the soffits and ceiling heights to adjoin. Throughout the installation, multiple products arrived with small defects that could have hindered the final look. To work through this, the installation team, led by Site Foreman Adam Farr and Project Manager Matt Kaczmarek, came up with alternate methods to install the products and still achieve the overall desired look. “There were definitely a lot of challenges within this installation, but the team worked together great, and we were able to create a space that is professional, yet fosters creativity and collaboration” says Project Manager Matt Kaczmarek.

The design within the space was unique, with different felt choices throughout with various size, shapes, and colors. BDH and the firm wanted to put a local spin on their office; featuring texture, patterns, bold colors, and colorful photo art showcasing local streets and landmarks, giving a nod to the community in which the employees work, live, and play. These unique design choices, paired with floor-to-ceiling windows, pulls the space together well.

Floor Covering Installer (FCI) magazine has recognized H.J. Martin and Son with an installation award in the category of Commercial Resilient. For nine consecutive years, the company has received recognition in the commercial or residential categories.

The FCI’s annual Installation Awards, given to the most innovative installers and interesting flooring installations across a range of residential and commercial flooring categories, are recognized by trade experts in the industry.

The flooring for the West De Pere Intermediate School project, which included a creative combination of patterns and contrasting colors that work within the district’s brand, was submitted by H.J. Martin and Son for the 2022 entry.

The design featured several intricate shapes and patterns within the flooring. In addition, there is a large logo “W” for “West De Pere” that was laid into the floor. Part of the challenge was to keep the joints lined up because it looked like a tile with the joints lined up and the unique angles that came together.

In the main hallways, there were a few different colors and shapes used, and it was a challenge to keep the seams lined up to achieve a cohesive look in the end.

The new 123,400-square-foot building, designed with a “main street” concept, is a colorful, vibrant, innovative learning center for the Green Bay, Wisconsin suburb. Large meeting areas, blocks of lockers, and interconnected study areas can all be found in the structure.

“The building offers a bright and exciting environment for students the moment they walk thought the doors,” said Tyler Vandenlangenberg, foreman at H.J. Martin and Son. “The students and teachers are able to experience more of a ‘neighborhood’ feeling while in the building,” he said.

The West De Pere School District has been experiencing rapid growth in the last decade and found that a new Intermediate School was needed for 5th and 6th grades to address projected capacity needs.

This project was an ideal candidate for the FCI Award because it required a skilled and experienced workforce due to its unusual installation. Over the course of seven months, the H.J. Martin and Son crew installed numerous Starnet products in the structure including J&J Kinetex, Milliken Carpet Tile, Everlast Rubber, Daltile Color Wheel Wall Tile and Mosaic, Tarkette/Johnsonite Base, and Mapei.

Jon Namba, Editorial Director for FCI said, “Thank you for your participation and the work you are doing in the flooring installation industry.”

The FCI Installation Awards are valued by the H.J Martin and Son team as they are chosen by other experts in the construction industry.

CEO and President Edward Martin expressed his joy at witnessing his team’s continued success. “Our crews are incredibly gifted, and they deserve recognition for continually showing up to handle the most difficult tasks with such proficiency.”
